A series of 8 or 9 coves that go by the collective name of Cala d' Or. Most are deep inlets edged with grey rocks and pine woods. General Description: Founded as an artists' colony in the 1930s, this purpose-built and continually expanding resort consists of attractive mostly low-rise, bright, white local-style buildings and narrow streets dotted with pine trees; most development dates from the 1970s. The vibrant pedestrian zone NW of Cala d' Or and Cala Gran is the focal point of the town. Cala Llonga is the deepest inlet and contains the marina, whose wharves are thick with many restaurants and cafes. The greatest concentration of shops, restaurants, banks, etc., is in the area behind Cala Gran and Cala d' Or. Each cove also has a small nucleus of amenities. Expensive boutiques and leather shops, as well as many 'artesanias' (handicraft shops) and a few galleries; the usual tourist paraphernalia is also on offer. Sunday market at Felanitx; Wednesday and Saturday at Santanyi.
